They geared themselves up after the one-minute interval and established a decent lead in third quarter of the set. They showed superb coordination in next couple of rallies and strengthened their grip over game with few uninterrupted points.

The concluding figures of 21-18 took them into third set which turned into survival of the fittest war with this revised score position.

They stood toe-to-toe in most part of the game as the match kept swinging between them until last shot was played.

Finally, Kasper and Amanda struck hard when it mattered and seized the honour with a favourable margin of 21-17.

Global Solidarity in Badminton on Solibad Day 2012!

Tuesday, October 02, 2012 - Text by Jessica Mah | Photos by Ellie Jackson and Patrick Bontant

Badminton personalities, including Olympic silver medallist Nathan Robertson and Denmark’s Peter Gade, spearheaded global flash mobs as shuttlecocks and rackets again took centre stage two months after London 2012.

More than a hundred cities and towns – across countries such as Australia, China (Hong Kong), France, Guam, the Philippines and Qatar (at right, below) – hosted mass gatherings last Saturday to support and raise awareness of the charity Solibad – Badminton without Borders, which funds projects for under-privileged children. Young ones at an orphanage in Indonesia (at left) also played their part in this venture.

Hamilton, New Zealand kicked off the flash mobs with a haka, followed by a specially choreographed routine performed with shuttlecocks and rackets. Kuala Lumpur, New Delhi (in Bollywood style), Singapore, Tokyo, Kazakhstan and Copenhagen followed suit along with tiny Pacific islands and villages in Africa.

Veteran shuttler, Gade, was part of a group of Danish national team players to participate in Copenhagen’s flash mob while France’s Pi Hongyan dazzled the crowd outside the Louvre Museum in Paris. In Malaysia, former world finalist Wong Choong Hann and former stars, Lee Wan Wah and Chan Chong Ming, celebrated ‘KL Badminton style’.

“This is my first time joining a flash mob. It was a great experience seeing people from all walks of life coming together with a shared goal and giving it their all to make it a success,” said Choong Hann.

In London, a ‘Challenge the Stars’ fundraiser after the flash mob gave badminton fans a chance to play against Robertson; former world champion and Mixed Doubles silver medallist at Athens 2004.

At the same time, during the Czech Republic International Badminton tournament – one of the highest graded tournaments in Europe - Solibad ambassador Petr Koukal took advantage of the break between quarter-finals and semifinals to gather players and officials for a flash mob; unprecedented in badminton tournaments. Elsewhere, other Solibad ambassadors – some of the best players in their countries - held flash mobs in iconic places in their home towns or at badminton halls. In Manilia, Philippines, Solibad flash mobs were shown on national television.

Last year’s inaugural Solibad Day saw celebrations in 65 cities in 43 countries.

“Our target was to reach 100 cities this year and we are still getting videos from new places so we’ll definitely exceed that,” said Solibad’s founder and French photo-journalist Raphael Sachetat (in black at front of Paris flash mob; below).

“People are saying how much fun they had performing the flash mobs. It shows that the badminton community, from leisure players to top stars, can work together to make our projects come true. I can only imagine the smiles on the faces of the children around the world that we help.”

This year, funds raised will go to Gravata, Brazil where Solibad supports a local badminton academy helping children return to school and escape violence at home. Solibad’s other projects include orphanages in Bali, Indonesia, and Kuala Lumpur and most recently a pilot scheme in France that aims to bridge the gap between physically-challenged persons and able-bodied persons through playing badminton.

Denmark Open: Day 1 - Galaxy of Stars for Gade’s Goodbye

Tuesday, October 16, 2012 - Text by Dev Sukumar

The local leg of hometown hero Peter Gade’s farewell kicked off today on the sidelines of the qualifier for the 59th edition of the Denmark Open.

The picturesque town of Odense plays host to the event that is loaded with more than usual significance for Danish fans as their badminton icon, Gade – three-time winner of this tournament – competes here for the last time. Appropriately, he released his autobiography today as the qualification round unfolded. His career will finally wind up at the Copenhagen Masters in December.

Besides seeing Gade in action, there is much more fans can look forward to in the coming days. It’s the first Premier Super Series tournament after the London Olympics and players from every country have turned out in strong numbers. Perhaps the only big star missing is the recently-married Lin Dan. Chief Referee John Hansen, who has been at the helm of the Denmark Open since 1977, is impressed by the turnout.

“This is the strongest Denmark Open we’ve had in recent times,” he said. “I’m especially looking forward to the Men’s Doubles.”

In the absence of two-time Olympic champion Lin Dan, the Men’s Singles title favourite is Lee Chong Wei, the world No. 1. Having won the previous Super Series – the Japan Open – in comfortable fashion, the Malaysian will look to reclaim the Denmark Open that he last won in 2005.

His principal opponent here will be Chen Long, the Olympic bronze medallist. Chen beat Lee in the final last year, and it will be interesting to see if the two can set up another final encounter. However, there are others in the draw who might prevent that eventuality.

Danish youngster Viktor Axelsen will take on Lee early tomorrow, and since Axelsen hails from Odense, he can expect vociferous home support in his first-round match. Chen Long’s compatriots Chen Jin (3), Wang Zhengming and Du Pengyu, Indonesia’s Sony Dwi Kuncoro, Japan’s Sho Sasaki (5) and Thailand’s Boonsak Ponsana will likewise hope to feature in the business end of the tournament.

The Women’s Singles draw looks as exciting as the men’s. Apart from world No. 3 Wang Xin, every top player has arrived, and it might be a fascinating event. The draw boasts of the likes of Wang Yihan (1), Li Xuerui (2), Saina Nehwal (3), Wang Shixian (4), Tine Baun (5), Juliane Schenk (6) and Jiang Yanjiao (8). Yihan and Xuerui are certainly the favourites to reach the final – as they have done in the case of the All England, Asian Championships, and the London Olympics this year. This is the first time fans will be seeing Nehwal and Schenk since the Olympics, and they will be keen to see if the break has refreshed the two players.

Among the other contenders, China’s Wang Shixian will be desperate for a good performance after her first-round loss at the China Masters, while Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon, who is not seeded here, will be hoping to land her first title of 2012.

Most of the top doubles pairs will also be in action, adding to the potential for this year’s Denmark Open to be a cracker of an event.

Meanwhile, after today’s qualifiers, the following persons/pairs advanced to the main draw:

MS: Scott Evans (Irl), Suppanyu A (Tha), Dmytro Zavadsky (Ukr) and Anand Pawar (Ind).

WS: Romina Gabdullina (Rus), Lok Yan Poon (HK), Nichaon Jindapon (Tha) and Kaori Imabeppu (Jap).

MD: Joachim Fischer Nielsen/Jonas Rasmussen (Den), Yonathan Suryatama Dasuki/Hendra Aprida Gunawan (Ina), Alvent Yulianto Chandra/Markis Kido (Ina) and Chai Biao/Zhang Nan (Chn).

WD: Camilla Martens/Mia Sejr Nielsen (Den), Julie Finne-Ipsen/Rikke S Hansen (Den), Isabella Nielsen/Mai Surrow (Den) and Petya Nedelcheva/Dimitria Popstoikova (Bul).

XD: Oliver Roth/Johanna Goliszewski (Ger), Tao Jiaming/Tang Jinhua (Chn), Kim Ki Jung/ Kim So Young (Kor) and Patipat Chalardchaleam/Savitree Amitrapai (Tha).
